Learning about Bromatology

also known as “Food science” in modern terms…

While Bromatology is the study of food science, these aspects of foods are most commonly studied in food science.

  1. Chemical Composition: Analyzing proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and harmful contaminants or toxins.
  2. Food Safety and Quality: Ensuring products meet legal health regulations, checking for spoilage or adulteration, and verifying proper sterilization.
  3. Processing and Engineering: Studying how industrial production, packaging, and storage affect shelf-life and nutrition.
  4. Physiological Impact: Evaluating how foods interact with human metabolism, toxicology, and overall health

The five fields of food science prevalent are:

  1. Sensory Science: Studies how people use their senses (taste, smell, sight, and touch) to evaluate food quality, texture, and flavor. Scientists use this field to test new products and create appealing tastes.
  2. Food Nutrition: Explores how food affects health, growth, and the human body. Experts work to keep foods healthy and nutritious while making them taste good.
  3. Food Chemistry: Examines the molecular structure and chemical properties of food ingredients. This helps scientists understand how foods change during cooking, storage, and processing.
  4. Food Microbiology: Focuses on tiny living organisms like bacteria, yeast, mold, and how they interact with food. It plays a major role in food safety, stopping spoilage, and fermentation.
  5. Food Engineering and Processing: Applies engineering and manufacturing rules to turn raw farm products into safe, packaged foods on a large scale.
