Short story – Mother and daughter

There once lived a young woman named Anya, who was struggling to balance her new job, marriage, and motherhood.

Every day felt like a test she was failing—her toddler’s tantrums, her boss’s deadlines, and her own exhaustion. One evening, she came home in tears and told her mother, “I can’t do this anymore.. I feel like I’m falling apart.”

Her mother, listened quietly, then asked Anya to follow her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed them on the stove. Into one, she dropped carrots, into another, eggs, and into the last, coffee beans.

After twenty minutes, she turned off the flame and asked Anya what she saw.

“Carrots, eggs, and coffee,” Anya replied, puzzled.

“Look closer,” said the mother.
She pointed to the carrots – once firm, now soft and weak.
The eggs – once fragile, now hard inside.
And the coffee beans – they had changed the water itself, releasing their rich aroma and color.

Anya’s mother smiled gently.
“Life’s heat comes for everyone. You can be like the carrot and lose your strength. Or be like the egg and harden your heart. Or you can be like the coffee bean and transform your surroundings with your inner strength.”

Anya’s eyes filled with tears, but this time, they weren’t of defeat. She hugged her mother tightly and whispered, “I want to be the coffee.”

Years later, Anya shared the same lesson with her own daughter—when she faced her first big challenge. And that’s how her mother’s wisdom lived on—an unbroken thread between generations of strong women who refused to give up.
