Parents and grandparents save their Kancheevaram silk sarees and hand it down across generations. How does the silk stay good?
Some tips to care for silk sarees and preserve them across decades.
- Do not wash them or put them in a washer dryer
- Iron them carefully, with a cotton towel on top of it. Ironing it too many times, makes them get holes
- Once worn, air dry the saree before folding and keeping it back in the shelves
- If you do not plan to wear a silk saree for a long time, put paper between the layers and then fold it (like a brand new saree)
- At least once or twice a year, unfold the saree, air dry it, refold and shelve it again
- Try not to mix your silk saree collection with other fabric. Some fabric sticks to the silk sarees and rubs in easily.
- Most of the silk sarees have attached blouse pieces (included with the saree). Tear it from the saree, otherwise it will rip over years.
