Brain dumping – A mental decluttering tool

Interesting phrase “Brain dump”… caught my attention during a discussion with a colleague.

This is a technique that people who have anxiety issues often practice and/or is recommended to them!

The individual takes a paper and pen (or a computer document). They write down whatever is in their mind for a time boxed 10 to 15 minute period. It helps empty their minds and clears up space to learn and process more.

Doing it at the onset of the day helps have a fresh start. This prepares us for all the activities lined up for the day. Doing it at the end of the day helps clear our minds and get a good night’s sleep. Doing it during the day helps our brains process more complex information. This prevents them from slowing down as the day progresses.

Some would not know it as brain dumping, and call it something else. However, it is a technique that many of us follow! Some of us create to-do lists. Others write poetry. Some prefer to pen it down. We all follow different routes to clear our minds.

Interesting concept, and feels nice to be back to learning new things!

An interesting aspect about the template above is that it makes us think about what we are grateful for. It does this at the onset. This triggers us to think about something positive instead of all the things currently occupy space in our minds.

For those who are interested to try it out, a sample template has been shared above. Use it, or start writing on a blank sheet of paper! Either way, it makes a difference!

Writing it down, rearranges the furniture of our minds!
