Short story – Jack’s lemonade stand

One nice summer afternoon, 10 year old Jack tasted his grandmother’s lemonade and smiled with satisfaction. He decided he will set up a lemonade stand for his community.

He pushed his table to the front of his yard. His grandmother made a jar of lemonade for him. He made a handwritten sign that read “Come and have lemonade.” Then he placed an empty jar with “50 cents a cup” written on it.

The sign he made was crooked. The cups were mismatched. He was happy & cheerful and wanted everyone on the block to taste his lemonade.

For the first hour, not a single person stopped. Jack sighed and thought about packing up.

Just then, an elderly neighbor walked over. “How much for a cup?” she asked.

“Fifty cents,” Jack replied with a smile.

The woman took a sip, paused, and smiled. “Mmm… tastes like sunshine.” She dropped a five-dollar bill into the jar.

Soon, others from the neighborhood came by. The lemonade was not perfect, but because Jack’s big grin was contagious. By the end of the day, his jar was almost full. Everyone who came left with a smile and felt happy.

When his mom asked him what he learned, Jack said, “I guess people don’t always buy what’s best. They buy what makes them feel good.”

Sometimes, the recipe for success is just a smile, a little effort, and the courage to show up.
