Learning about Social capital

Today my daughter asked me if I knew what was social capital, and if I had any?

For those who do not know what social capital is, let me explain…

What does that mean?

  1. Connections: You have social connections and a circle that you are part of. These can be neighbors, PTO communities, friends circle, work relationships etc. Social connections these days mean your network measured by social media – like Facebook, Insta, Twitter followers.
  2. Support: We feel that we have the information, goodwill & support of those in our network.
  3. Shared goals: Whether small or big, there are common goals & objectives that we work towards. Like work relationships, non-profits, volunteering groups etc.
  4. Trust: Your social connections see you as a trustworthy person, feeling comfortable to reach out to you when in need.

How would that individual feel when they have it or not?

  1. Stronger communities: When people in the community have shared goals, they look out for each other. They help each other. Inherently, the community thrives.
  2. Economic betterment: Access to job opportunities, financial support & new markets.
  3. Goals: Ability to set group goals, and work consistently to achieve them.
  4. Skill development: Access to community resources to upskill themselves, when in need.

Let us simplify it with examples:

  1. Say someone with social capital loses their job. Their friends & social connections help them find a new job. They recommend upskilling in relevant areas. They also help them get back on their feet quickly.
  2. Parents collaborating to organize a school event or fundraiser show social capital. They achieve this through shared goals and mutual support to the school community.
  3. Neighbors collaborate to build and maintain a community garden, fostering cooperation and a sense of shared purpose.

Now, think about it. Do you have a social network, community, friends? How involved are you in these groups? What is your social capital?

The best way to build social capital is to care & get involved in your community! Build your network.. slowly & steadily you will see your social capital increasing!
