Learning from two great teachers – Guru & Shukra

In Indian mythology, Guru (Jupiter) is portrayed as the Teacher of Devas (Gods) and Shukra (Venus) is portrayed as the Teacher of Demons (Asuras). Sharing what I have learned from what they teach and how it is meaningful for us!

Guru also known as Brihaspati, Jupiter is the Teacher of Gods

He teaches us knowledge & wisdom. His students learn patience, ethics, self-control and righteousness (Dharma). When our mind thinks about “What is the right thing to do?”, consider that Guru is leading our thoughts in the right direction. They stand out with their integrity, faith, long-term thinking, learning mindset and enjoy mentoring others.

Shukra also known as Shukracharya, Venus is the Teacher of Asuras

He teaches us to be goal oriented. His students learn to be resilient during tough times, strategy, diplomacy, material prosperity, wealth creation and resourcefulness. They have a distinct eye for business and financial success, art & beauty, relationships, comfort & luxury.

In all the battles fought by Devas and Asuras (Good and Evil), Asuras always lost. They needed to learn to rise up from failures, build back their resources, learn to be resilient through tough times, strategize and gain the physical strength to fight and try to win again.

Imagine a teacher teaching us how to rise up from failures, believe in ourselves, strategize our efforts and upskill ourselves to be able to give another shot winning again. That is Shukra (Venus).

In life, we all face many ups and downs. And every time we fall & fail, we need to dust ourselves back and find the strength within ourselves to rise up again. Who guides us in the process, day in and day out? Who helps us with resources to sustain till we find our path back. We do need the blessings and teachings of Venus (Shukracharya).

Many of us develop one and neglect the other. Some of us become knowledgeable but unable to prosper. Others become prosperous but feel something is missing.

Imagine two travelers trying to cross a vast forest. The first traveler carries a lamp given by Guru. The lamp reveals the correct path, the dangers, and the destination. However, he carries no food, no tools, and no plan. He understands the way but struggles to complete the journey.

The second traveler carries supplies, maps, and clever strategies taught by Shukracharya. He can solve problems, overcome obstacles, and is very resilient. However, without a lamp, he sometimes wanders in circles and loses sight of where he wanted to go, and ends up choosing the wrong path multiple times.

When these two travelers walk together, one shows the direction, the supplies from the other helps sustain and complete the journey. Together they are able to reach the destination.

When we are young, we choose to build up our resources, comfort & luxury and as we grow older we think about what truly matters, the kind of person we have become and if we are doing the right things in life.

Now think about where you are in life? What do you lack? Are you going in circles? Do you have the resources? What is the impediment in your journey?

The ideal is learning to balance between both.

  • Earn wealth, but ethically.
  • Build a career, but keep your values.
  • Enjoy comforts, but remain grateful.
  • Learn continuously, but also apply what you learn.

Currently, Jupiter and Venus are conjunct (together) in the sign of Cancer. We can see them next to each other in the skies too. It is a great opportunity to learn from both the Great teachers and let the learnings and blessings from both of them come together and create the ideal balance in our lives 🙏🏻
