Living around people who know you by name

We were once known as our parent’s children, then we grew to be adults making a name for ourselves, as we grow older…

…and have children, we tend to be known as their parents. Not a bad thing though.. however, there comes a point in life where we would want people around us to know us for who we are, and not based on our relationships..!

The warmth one gets when you step into a place and people cheer your name and welcome you, has a different feeling! It can only be experienced!

There is an old TV show called Cheers – set in a bar, where people come everyday to drink. Think it was in the 70s or 80s… and thanks to all the re-runs and Netflix / Amazon, we get to see it often!

In that bar, when someone enters, one or two people say hi and greet them. However, the way people greet Norm (a beer drinker who sits at the end of the bar counter) is quite different. Everyone, I mean EVERYONE sitting in the bar cheer his name and say “Norm” when he enters the bar. When the series starts, Coach and Sam cheer for him, and later it becomes a trend! No one else gets that kind of warm attention just by stepping into a room!

A video compilation of Norm’s entry scenes – for those who have watched the series, it will make you smile!

Life might be getting rough, and we may be going through ups and downs… but having a group of friends rooting for you, making you feel included and welcome makes a difference!

Few lines from Cheers TV show title song that stuck with me…

Sometimes you wanna go
Where everybody knows your name
And they’re always glad you came
You wanna be where you can see (ah-ah)
Our troubles are all the same (ah-ah)
You wanna be where everybody knows your name
Where everybody knows your name
And they’re always glad you came
You wanna go where people know
People are all the same
You wanna go where everybody knows your name

It is never too late to create your circle where people know your name, and are always glad you came!
